Caring for Our Lands

What does it mean to “care for” conservation land and property?

The immediate answer is to maintain trails and boundaries and make sure the land is available and accessible for public use.

You may also think of activities such as acquiring suitable additional conservation land, surveying (or approving) environmentally sensitive changes to property in the town, and managing funds related to conservation.

Atkinson’s Conservation Commission does have the above duties, but responsibility for town lands involves much more than the tasks listed above. It means responsibility for administrative, regulatory, and direct maintenance of conservation lands.

The Commission manages the conservation process, and can use the help of citizens. There are many tasks that do not have deadlines, and most take only a few hours a month. (Tasks with deadlines or heavy time commitments are the responsibility of Commission members.)

If you can assist with any of the tasks documented here, or would like more information, contact any Conservation Commission member or send email to staff@atkinsonconservation.org.
