The Atkinson Conservation Commission sponsored a Paddle Day from the Island Pond public canoe/kayak launch on Saturday, September 22nd. The event was held to encourage public use of the launch and to provide an outing for area paddlers.

Saturday’s event was enjoyed by several community members and one dog. Denise Legault and Michelle Veasey of the Conservation Commission welcomed all present, and Dan Kimball of the Commission gave a short talk on pond ecology, geared specifically to Big Island Pond. Following the introductions, the group launched from the canoe landing and paddled around Governor’s Island. Along the way discussions were held on the rich history and ecology of the Island Pond area.

The Atkinson Canoe/Kayak launch is open to any interested persons.  Canoe and kayak enthusiasts can reach the launch by taking Waters Edge Road off of Rte 111 and turning right onto Stickney Road.  Parking and the launch are on the right, approximately 2/10th of mile down Stickney.  The lake association lowers the water on Columbus Day weekend and returns the water level to normal levels in the early spring.

Besides raising awareness of the availability of the canoe launch area, the Commission took the opportunity to post new signs made by Dan Kimball, and inspect the launch dock, originally built by the Atkinson Lions Club, now in need of repair.  Volunteers interested in rebuilding the dock should contact the Conservation Commission at staff@atkinsonconservation.org.
